Is French 101 doable in 8 weeks? How is taking a language online?

Next year I'm going to be high school senior. I am hoping to take AP Gov, AP Lang, AP Bio, and Spanish 3 Honors at my school. I also want to take Calculus II and French 101 at my local community college. The French schedule is very limited so I don't have many options. I really love Spanish and English and language in general, which is why I want French. I know I will have already met the language requirement with the Spanish. With all of these other classes going on, do you think that French 101 is doable in 8 weeks (the express format - vs. the normal 16)? It meets twice a week for an hour and a half. If none of the on-campus options worked out, is learning a language as effective when the class is completed online?

Thank you!

I have taken introductory languages in summer classes on two different occasions. Both times one full year of credits were earned in only six or eight weeks. These were intensive courses with three to four hours of class time each day, followed by roughly four hours of homework that afternoon/evening. Personally, I recommend this level of intensity of instruction. The French 101 course that you describe is less intensive than the classes I took, but it would certainly be do-able. Be certain to leave time in your schedule for all of the homework that will be necessary.

On-line language instruction is a relatively new phenomenon. If you decide to try that, make certain that there is a good deal of “live” interaction with a language instructor. If you don’t already have a webcam and headset, you will probably need to get them.

I would love to be able to devote that much time to it! I just worry with my other classes. And I will have to look into how exactly the school runs its online courses. Thank you for your help!

It really depends on how you are with languages. If you’re the type that picks languages up easily, it’s definitely doable. If not, it might get overwhelming. Spanish will definitely help, but in the end it really depends on you.
