Is gay rights still taboo for a college essay?

I'm applying to college and I wanted to write about gay rights and I guess my fight for it. I volunteer for a gay youth shelter and I'm the publicist for the school's Gay Straight Alliance. I don't want to make the essay political AT ALL. I'm gonna focus on how I saw the community getting closer and bonding more. If I'm applying to some Ivies and a couple of high-ranked state schools, is it still taboo?

I’m pretty sure there are a lot of essays about students having struggles with being gay, so I don’t think it’s taboo. As long as you’re not applying to a religious school, it should be fine.
