is god real?

I'm not sure whether God exists or not.
If there is a God, I think he/she/it is too great for humans to ever comprehend. I feel like it's kind of blaspheme to put that god on the same level as us. Christianity teaches we are made in God's image, well, I think that's insulting to (my idea of) God.
Assuming there is a God, I don't think God is personally involved in people's lives. I think that this God would have planted the seeds of life somewhere on earth and just disinterestedly watched us evolve, if God was even paying any attention.

But for the time being, I don't believe in a God. I'm pretty sure I won't ever believe in God ever again. Still, there's a little bit of doubt in my mind, what if there is a God, then I'm going to Hell because I don't believe in him. But then, I thought about that. If God is as merciful/just as the Bible claims he is, then it is incredibly cruel to sentence a person to eternal pain for not believing in you. God supposedly gave us free will, well then how is it free will if our only choice is him or Hell? That is not what I consider a choice.
Also, people have had different circumstances that could affect whether they believed or not. For example, how can you expect that a person who had been mistreated/betrayed/used by 'Christian' people, and a person who never even heard about God, and a person who had been raised by a loving Christian family to have the same ability to believe? I'm using Christianity in this example but it could be any religion.

I think if God were to exist, there is no way that he would punish us scientific thinkers that refuse to listen to some random book that tells us how to live our lives. For this reason, I can safely assume that there is no God until I see some proof that doesn't lie in a random book.

Oh, and about Einstein's concept of a "God" that deals with all the natural variables of our Earth... all I have to say is that every once in a while, ONE planet is going to have the PERFECT means for allowing living organisms to survive on it. Think about it. There are probably millions of planets out there. We won the lottery. There is no "god" creating gravity for us. It just happened, that's why we're here, and that's why there's no life on Jupiter, etc.

My biggest hope for disproving religious theory lately has been the discovery of the Gliese-581c planet ("Earth 2" as they're calling it). And I certainly hope that can shed some light on the whole situation.
