I was accepted to stony brook for AOI mechanical engineering. as far as schools I’ve gotten into, I’d rather stony brook over binghamton, and stony brook is tied with rutgers (also got into purdue but only for undecided). right now I’m thinking rutgers would be the better path because I will already be in my major. do people with an AOI ever not get into their major? is acceptance into mechanical engineering automatic if I take the classes with the GPA or would I need to try to reapply for the major? It says I need a 3.0 and I’ve heard of things happening and people ending up with 2.9s and stuff, and If that happens to me, I would be screwed.
any opinions on whether area of interest is worth it?
AOI may be the designation before you declare your major. Students are often unaware of the various types of engineering that are possibilities. So the first year is often devoted to introducing students to breadth while starting the background common to them all. So it may be that Stony Brook refers to beginning engineering students as having AOI before they declare. You should call them on Monday.
Honestly, yes, there’s a possibility that you won’t get into the major. But in actuality, we WANT you to get into the program, so we’ll do what we can to help you get there. As long as you do well in your introductory coursework, you should have no problems.

So Chris, are some students admitted straight into the major but others admitted with AOI status?
that seems to be how it works. you’re accepted for undecided but your advisor knows what your goal is and will help you try to get into the major. same thing basically happened to me with Pitt and Purdue except there is no AOI, it’s just undecided so stony brook is pretty helpful there
