Is going to a community college first my best route?

Senior Year has not been great to me at all. I started the year off with great optimism and excitement for college and all the other things that go along with senior year. THEN i got Mono. My grades tanked because i missed two weeks of school, and it was tough to catch up in my honors and AP courses because of having post-mono issues. At this rate i will most likely get a D in AP Econ. Before i got Mono i had already applied to all the schools i wanted to attend next year. Cu Boulder, SFSU, Manhattan College were my top schools ( I am a Cali resident). I am looking to study engineering. With all this said, i have been accepted into Manhattan College, which was my top choice. However with the cost of the school and the fact that my first semester of senior year has not been great, I don’t think i’d be able to receive any scholarships, etc. I am not opposed to going to community college first. Especially because CC in SoCal is great for transferring into UCs, and most UCs are excellent in engineering. Would it be possible to maybe transfer to Manhattan College or Cu Boulder for engineering or physics after only one year of CC? I am pretty stressed right now and would appreciate any advice. Thank You.
-Please ignore any spelling issues i have, lol.

If the poor grades (like the D grade in AP economics) cause your admission offers to be rescinded, then you may not have any other choice but to start at community college or do something other than college after high school graduation.

Starting at community college is hardly the worst thing in California, since there is a well marked transfer pathway to UCs and CSUs. Do well in community college for the first two years, and UCs and CSUs will not use your high school GPA (most of them only accept junior level transfers anyway). For schools that accept sophomore level transfers after one year of college, high school record is still important, due to the limited amount of college work you will show.

Since cost is a concern, have you run the net price calculators on the various schools?

http://www.assist.org can show you what you need to take to prepare to transfer in your intended major to UCs and CSUs.

You might be able to. Look up the Common Data Set for each, section D.

See the CDSs at collegedata.com.

The community college route is a pretty decent option considering that you are a California resident. You can spend two years getting your GEs out of the way while saving a huge amount of money -and if you maintain a good GPA, you have a decent chance at getting into Cal, Berkeley, LA, or SD which are amazing engineering schools and the option to TAG into other UCs.

If cost is an issue, and you know you’ll be getting Ds in your senior year (which is grounds for rescinfation) you should seriously consider the CC route.

Thank you for all the helpful replies. It is exactly what I needed in a time of crazy stress.
