Is going to a UC truly worth it for computer science?

Hello, all! I know this question is probably asked very often, but I wanted some of your opinions.

I am a Computer Science major going to Foothill, and I plan to transfer to a university next year, but I’m not sure whether I should take the route of CSU or UC.

I am 18 and live with my parents in San Jose, and I wasn’t sure as to whether or not I should go to San Jose State University, which I hear has a great CS Department, as I would be able to save a lot of money because it is local. Or should I go to a UC like UCSD or UCSB, and end up racking up a bunch of student loans, but ultimately getting a superior education? And how superior would the education really be at a UC vs a CSU like SJSU?

As you can see on this link, the difference between SJSU, being ranked at 11, and the other UC’s is not very significant. It seems like they’re all genuinely good schools for CS.

I don’t know much about CS or about the California state college system, but, it sounds as if you plan on saving money primarily by living at home with your parents. Ultimately, it will come down to how much value you place on the residential college experience. To me, that is where the educational differential kicks in: outside the classroom. Have you run the numbers? How much debt can you possibly run up in two years of college?

SJSU has a top CS program so your plan to save money is a great idea. As you pointed out, the rankings are insignificant so the only thing that the UC’s could offer you is a chance to move away from home and give you more of a college experience. Is this worth the extra $20K+? You have a good plan, so stick with it.

SJSU has an outstanding CS program. No need to look any further.
