Is going to an out of state school even possible for me now? (Parents cut me off)

I didn’t “goose up” OU. I confirmed it was a strong department but also encouraged the OP to check the undergraduate origins of meteorology professors as many of them majored in things other than meteorology, often at schools which don’t offer it as a major. I also told the OP that Oklahoma was not worth getting into serious debt for.

First off…your OOS costs to attend any of those OOS universities would be at or more than $40,000 a YEAR. Unless your dad bought a very expensive sports car, he did not spend $120,000 on a car.

You need to work within the financial parameters you have. You are not the first or last student whose parents have said NO to funding college…never mind OOS costs at a public university.

You may have to think of alternate ways to achieve your goal. You can work full time, and save money to go to college. You can move to Oklahoma, get a job, and wait until you are 24 to enroll in college. You will then have instate residency for OK, and you will also be independent for financial aid purposes. And you can save money for college while you are working.

You can look for affordable options, either instate, or at schools with affordable costs.

As UCBA notes above, you can join the military. You will get tuition benefits when your term of service is over.

You can complete a two year course of study at your community college, and get a job in that field, and then pursue meteorology when you are able to pay for it yourself.

Thumper…you and I think alike…lol. I was thinking the same thing. And there seems to be some odd disconnect between the mom, dad, savings, and college. Wouldn’t the mom have known the source of the money for the car purchase? Would she really need her H to say, “we spent the college fund on the car,” for her to know that the college money was spent? since when does a wife not know the source of funds for a pricey car purchase?

and since it is doubtful that the parents spent 100k+ on car, then it would seem that the savings was a partial amount to put towards college with the balance to be paid out of current income.

It sounds like the mom has just been saying that they’ll pay for college, while the dad never had any intent to do so…and the savings was never earmarked for college in the dad’s eyes.

I suggest that all three of you sit down and have the facts in front of you. your dad obviously doesn’t know that you cant get loans for the amounts needed. He probably thinks you can because years ago, students could get big loans without parent cosigners. About 8 years ago, Sallie Mae stopped giving large student loans without parent cosigners because there were too many defaults and students didn’t understand what they were doing.
