is GPA calculated by % or mark (A,B,C etc)?

my question is very simple. Do schools use % to calculate GPA or the mark you get on your report card? Because different places have different standards for A and B. It seems like US schools have 90% as A right? It's only 86% for A here, but then it's also harder to achieve a 86% here ( i know a person who was getting mostly Bs here and went to US and got straight As).

Does it matter? As far as I know, in every school that uses both percentages and letter grades, the percentages and letter grades are directly related.

Not all US schools use 90% as an A either though.
My school uses a 93% as an A.

I also know of schools where a 94 is and A and a 93 is a B. It really does vary.

I think, in general, if the school grades with basic As, Bs, Cs, then GPA is done strictly by the grade (no matter where you are in the % range for that grade).

If, however, the school gives A, A-, B+, B, B- (etc) based on the specific % grade, then there are some variations in the grade points assigned.

THEN…there is the whole issue of weighted grades for AP/IB/Honors classes.

Simple as it seems…there just is no simple answer!

GPA is normally calculated through letter grades…

GPAs are typically determined by A,B, and Cs and not percentages. A overall percantage should not be converted to a GPA … each final grade should be converted to a A,B, and Cs and then a GPA computed (a 92% overall average could be … 100% (A), 88% (B), 88% (B) (3.33 GPA) … or 92%, 92%, 92% (4.00 GPA)). In addition differences in absolute percentage scales do not necessarily mean anything … at first glance a 93% requirement for an A may sound much tougher than a 85% reguirement; but without knowing how difficult the courses were this difference means little (an A might be asier in an easier course even with a 93% requirement).

I asked my superintendant to move our GPA scale to that shown on college board.com due to it would make us more competitive at better colleges currently if you make 7 A’s and 1 B you have a 3.88. If it was college boards GPA scale it could be a 3.96 so hopefully I can at least help the future kids from my school.

Thank you, everyone. so it seems that GPA is calculated by the mark instead of the percentage, which is fortuanate because it seems that a 86 is harder to get here than a 90 or 93 or whatever it is in the states.

there are so much boring homework that I always forget to do :S
