Is greek life too important here?

I read some negative things about the Greek life and culture of the college on another web site. Are there Gettysburg colleges who would want to comment. Is the Greek influence overwhelming? Is it a negative or positive influence?

I will try and help you out a little bit as an '06 alumni. Quite honestly, I think the greek scene at Gettysburg is blown out of proportion. Yes, it is there but I would say it’s far from dominating the social scene. I was an independent (non-Greek) while in college and I had friends that were Greek and friends that were independent like me. There was really no rift amongst the greeks and non greeks. There are plenty of people who go to frats every weekend to drink but that is not the only thing going on during the weekend

The school is actually really good about planning things for the weekend. There is a group called CAB (Campus Activities Board) which is basically a student run organization that plans activities. Some of the stuff they did when I was there were trips to Baltimore, DC, ect. They also brought well known bands (such as good charlotte and Maroon 5) and comedians to campus. About once a month there were coffee houses and open mic nights on campus. Also, there is a club on campus called “The attic” which had all sorts of themed parties. I’m sure I am forgetting some stuff but these are just a few things that quickly came to mind.

To be honest, I think the I only went to frat parties my freshman and sophomore year. After that my friends and I were sort of over the frat scene and stopped going. Also, there are plenty of people who go to frat parties and choose not to drink and it’s perfectly acceptable.

You should also remember that at Gettysburg you can’t rush until your sophomore year so people make friends before their Greek affiliation so friends are not limited to your frat/sorority brothers/sisters.

Another thought is that while the guys have frat houses, girls do not have sorority houses so they are not separated from the rest of the population (I lived with both greek affiliated and independent girls).

So these are just some of my thoughts as a independent recent alum. I don’t regret staying independent but I also don’t have hard feelings towards those who decided to go greek.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask and I will see if I can answer

Burgian06 Thanks for your thoughtful answer. It cleared up some nagging questions I had.
