Is GW Safe?

I was accepted to GW RD and I'm considering going...only, my parents are concerned with the safety of the campus. I'm visiting next week, but I was wondering if anyone who attends GW could fill me in on this info.

Thanks. :)

I visited the campus a couple weeks ago and have a few insights…

Foggy Bottom is one of DC’s best and safest neighbor hoods. It is near the White House, countless embassies, the IMF and World Bank and the National Mall. With all these things, it is hard not to assume there is authorities patrolling all near and at the campus.

GW also has its own police force, or, the ‘UPD’. Many call boxes are set up among the campus buildings for easy access to make emergency calls. As per the tour guide, you can expect them to arrive in less than a minute, no matter where you are.

And because of its location, GW is patrolled by the UPD, the DC police department, the Secret Service, the FBI, and probably countless security guards roaming around. DC gets a bad rap for its crime, but unless you are wondering off into the outskirts you do not see much of its hardships.

I agree with colls. Like any city, you do have to be careful; I wouldn’t recommend walking home alone at 3 AM. But Foggy Bottom is one of the safest areas of DC, and there are always UPD officers around, and there is the 4-Ride van service that you can call between 7 PM and 6 AM to pick you up and drop you off around campus.

Go the the GW hatchet, I believe there is a section about the GW crime report.
Every week is updated, and usually involves the snatching of cellphones, only one attempted rapa 1 week ago by some creep, but it was a few blocks out of the periphery of the school, around the CVS pharmacy at E street.
Inside our perimeter, we feel very safe.

Thank you so much! You’ve all been quite helpful. I’m visiting on Thursday, so I guess my parents and I will check it out then. Now I have some questions to ask the tour guide!

As an outsider, I toured through DC (okay… I got seriously lost). The surrounding area looked very safe. I saw very few “dark, shady corners” and it was mostly residential and commercial. GWU is under the district of SIXTEEN different police units/safety units, as per the admissions assistant direction. The campus itself felt very safe and for a small campus, there were a ton of blue light boxes. I saw policemen walking, riding bikes, and patrolling in cars as we toured the campus. I, too, review the GW Hatchet’s crime log. For the last few weeks, there were a couple of drunk bums and some kids throwing water balloons out the window, but nothing too serious.

I go to hs in a large city and my state u is right in the middle. We have WAY more problems right now than GW so my parents are pretty happy about my decision. My mom follows the hatchet too and I just signed up for my email account and received a message about what Multitasker mentioned so seems like the students are kept informed.

nbg127: yes, you are right, it comes in the mail on a very regular basis, plus you can sign to be texted as well if there is any alert you need to be aware of. I feel extremely safe in here. You are never to be alone! Good luck! and congrats in your acceptance!

Congratulations! GW seemed very safe when we visited.

In any large city, you need to use common sense. Buddy up after dark, don’t flash money or jewelry, watch carefully over your purse or wallet.

Here are some things that might make your parents feel a little more comfortable. Ask the guide on your tour:
Find out where the safety blue lights are (in case you’re ever in trouble) and get info on how to call for the campus security transportation vans if you’re ever in a situation late at night and shouldn’t be walking around alone.
