Hey all,
I wanted to get some insight on a dilemma I'm facing. I really want to go to a couple colleges, one I'm looking into being George Washington University. However, a friend told me that it's not as high quality as I will need; you see, I'm planning on going to Johns Hopkins for Medical School, but I want to do Pre-Med someplace else and GWU is one place I had considered. However, I obviously want to go to a college or university that JHU will consider worthy when looking for Med students.
Can anyone compare my chances of getting into JHU after going to GWU as opposed to someplace like Duke or McGill?

Thanks so much

No medical school will reject an applicant simply because (s)he attended GWU. A student doing well there should have some excellent options.

As a tip, don’t choose your colleges based on what you think you will impress JHU Med. Many pre-meds change their mind about medical school, including those who are “sure” medicine is what they want to do. Only half of the students taking the MCAT end up applying to medical school, let alone the students who drop out before that point!

Just the facts: GWU placed 2 at JHU med. By comparison, JHU placed 65, UMBC placed 6, UMCP placed 12, UVA placed 11, and Georgetown placed 5.

Of course GW may have fewer pre-meds, so all of those statistics could mean nothing to you. According to GW med, their own undergrad is one of the major feeders to their med school.

You also have to remember that med school isn’t like law school, where there are tons of accredited low quality schools where graduates have very limited job opportunities. The number and size of medical schools is tightly controlled so to my knowledge they are all fairly high quality. Just getting into medical school is a formidable accomplishment, even if it is not the most highly ranked.
