just wondering.....cause i am applying to both, and i hope i get in...
here are my stats....just to let you guys know...1370, 3.83 UNC EA, will be 3.91 for Uva and when i send trimester grades to UNC....i am appling RD to Uva...(from idaho..)

so which school is harder to get into out of state?

As far as the "quota" for instate/out of state, yes, UNC-CH is harder to get into. According to the state laws, out of staters can only make up 18% of the incoming class in the UNC system, but for Virginia state schools, the quota is 30%-35%ish. Thank goodness - I'm applying to Chapel Hill from instate and I'm glad I don't have to deal with such keen competition for those select spots in the class...and I have a little more leeway for William and Mary.

However, I do think that the UNC system board could put up the quota a little more. Even though we pay taxes for the schools, people from different areas of the country add a little more variety than somebody who maybe just grew up on the other side of the state. My guidance counselor really hates the low quota, too, because it makes the school more homogenous.
