There are many threads about colleges being overrated(ie Cornell washu) so what do you guys think about the supposed top dog of colleges? Does its reputation really live up to its overall quality of education?

Yes, I think Harvard undergrad is WAY overrated.

no your an _______

It's pretty much accepted that Harvard is overrated: that's why it's unnecessary to have a lengthily discussion about it.

k then what school in the ivy league is not overrated?

I think Cornell is extremely underrated on CC.

Incubus - "Wish You Were Here" is not an overrated song.

Brown? Dartmouth? Princeton?

The ones most haven't heard of: Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, and Penn.

Just to prove my point: Somebody in my newspaper class mistook Penn State for UPenn.

kwu- wishyouwerehere as in the Pink Floyd song

sorry but i kind of pushed this thread into another direction- so how is harvard overrated? no one has really answered this question. All ive gotten was that yes harvard is overrated

^ I think Harvard is overrated because it's known as the "best" when most people don't seem to consider others like Stanford. They know it's "good" without knowing anything about Harvard like its endowment (which is the largest of any university).

Harvard is a fine institution; however, I think most of its strengths lie in the graduate schools rather than undergrad based off of its research opportunities and highly-knowledgeable professors. Not to say their undergrad is a joke....

There are many great schools, but Harvard has the potential to open doors like no other institution on the planet. What does it mean for a school to be overrated? I would assume it would mean that graduates from the institution are less successful/competitive than would be expected. Is this the case with Harvard?

Harvard is overrated on CC. You fail at life if you don't go to HYPSM.

In real life, it is just right, one of the best universities in the world.

Not at all. It's the probably the finest, most impressive institution of higher learning on the planet, so it's not really possible for it to be overrated.

I think its a bit overrated if you think that Harvard's education is better than the rest.

Some of our school's alumni work with Harvard grads and they come back to give a presentation to classes and they talk about how they were at first intimidated but then realized they were just as good if not better at doing their job than Harvard grads.

In fact, this guy at Deloitte is now a senior and was promoted multiple times based off his work and success while the Harvard guy he started off with has not gotten as far.

harvards a bit overrated compared to great schools like mit stanford duke and caltech

If you're talking about overall quality of education, than every private institution is highly overrated. You can get a high quality education at almost every university-many at 1/4 the cost of a well-known, private institution. If you're talking about life opportunities, there is nothing overrated about Harvard.

its overrated, sorry but not all harvard grads get whatever job they want you know. duke alums for example are just as good.

It's overrated by ppl who aren't really aware of its resources, only go by its "Hah-vard" name and think going there will guarantee sucess and fame. The gap between Harvard and say, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, Stanford, really isn't that wide. However, Harvard definitely deserves to be called ONE of the best colleges in the world.

Does that make it overrated?

duke, you are confusing individual attributes with the attributes of the institution. Course for course, I'm sure it's no better than a large number of well-known and not so well-known universities. That's not my point. Harvard will provide opportunities like no other institution. What a student does with those opportunities is a different issue. Waitwhat's point is spot on, but the truth is the "Hah-vard" folks she alludes to make up most of the world. Employers, most professional schools, and government agencies put Harvard in a class of its own (deserved or not-just the way it is). My point is that Harvard is not overrated simply because of the opportunities it affords. If you're just talking quality of learning enviroment, every private instution is overrated. Every good state university can provide a great education to the motivated student.
