Is Harvard SSP worth the money?

I really want to go because i think it sounds like a great opportunity and chance of a lifetime to take classes at Harvard University! I have read most of the posts on this subject, and there seems to be a lot of students who were uncertain with parents that were really pushing them. For me, it's the opposite. I need to convince my parents to dish out the $10,000, so I was wondering. Is it worth the money?

Also, a lot of people have said that admissions wasn't all that selective (I already got in) and the program wasn't all that respected among colleges. Is this true?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Depends on what you do there.

The SSP program will not help you get into Harvard or other Ivys. It is a money-making program for the university, giving no financial aid to needy qualified students. In that respect it is not competitive, as your competition is only other students who have $10,000 for a summer program.

Usually accurate.

Incorrect.

About half the students I know that attended have since been accepted ED/EA to ivies or similarly selective schools.

$10K is a lot to some people, to others it’s not. Who can say if it’s worth it? As compared to what? Will it assist you in future plans? That’s debatable given other options. Someone getting a job at the local pool or summer camp is as valuable to a top school as a kid at an ultra ritzy summer pgm.

The summer school program gives partial tuition aid, I see. Not for housing. Glad to hear it is made more affordable to the 99%.

^ I attended two years ago and had around 7k shaved from the total cost. So yes, it provides financial aid.

You have your whole life to take college classes. Relax, do a few week-long programs, maybe get a part-time job and buy a car.

^This exactly.

To attend Harvard for a full year and take eight 4-credit courses costs $36,305, excluding room, board, and fees. If you are paying full-fare, that comes out to $4,538 per 4-credit course.

By contrast, Harvard Summer School costs $2,700 for one 4-credit course, excluding room, board, and fees.
