The question is above.
I noticed they gave Financial Aid to only 7 students this year.
If I apply as an international applicant, does that mean that it puts me in a bad light,or are they looking to increase their international student enrolment?

They just don’t give good aid because they cannot afford to. International students tend to be the most revenue-generating source of income for colleges because in general, international students can afford to pay for themselves. Internationals applying for FA are less likely to enroll compared to internationals that can pay. Bottom line.

I don’t understand what you mean by “putting you in a bad light”? It isn’t propaganda or anything.

So basically an Int’l student looking for aid shouldn’t apply?
I asked because HM sounded great to me adn was considering applying there. However,I shall be requiring a full ride and obviousl do not want to waste an application.
By ‘bad light’ I mean, would it make the adcoms look at me less favourably.
No need to be so terse!

Sorry, I’m not being terse, I just didn’t understand what you were saying.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t apply, just that if you are looking for a full ride, chances are you won’t get it unless you are an exceptional and accomplished student. Apply, you may be accepted, however, they may not offer aid - thereby expecting you to find your own way to meet the fees e.g. students loans etc.

Read Silverturtle’s guide to SAT and college admissions.

Somewhere on the second page of that guide, she mentions something about international being at a disadvantage - sucks for me too since I am international as well.

Good luck! And sorry I gave you grief about aiming at HPY, if that’s what you want, go for it. Lord knows I have no chance at my first choice but I’m giving it a shot anyway! :)

Mudd is very keen on “diversity,” especially in gender and in what they perceive to be disadvantaged minorities. If Mudd is a perfect fit for you and you’re a stellar student with a compelling “something extra” in your background, it wouldn’t hurt to apply for the President’s Scholarship.

I wish I had seen this earlier. I’m an international sophomore at Mudd receiving significant need-based aid. Compared to peer schools like MIT and Stanford, Mudd is poorer and cannot support as many FA students. But they can support <10 international FA students each year. Also, Mudd doesn’t attract /as many/ international applicants as peer schools.

@GeekMom Internationals aren’t eligible for the President’s scholarship.

@AudreyH
Internationals can generally afford to pay for themselves? Where did you hear of this? Also, why would poorer students be less likely to enroll than richer students?

Uhm, statistically, internationals are generally able to pay (perhaps even through government sponsorship) - intls tend to not apply if they cannot afford it.

In retrospect, I wish I had applied financial aid. (I’m an international)
There really aren’t that many international students here, and thus the chances don’t seem too bleak, especially if what fiona said was correct (I never knew about such numbers).
I think there’s only about 30 (or maybe less) international students in each grade
