Is it? Like growing up in a broke family, away from certain family members and having to grow up earlier than other kids and be more mature.. perhaps changing countries as well?? Would that be considered a hook if I mentioned it in my essays?

No, not really. It could provide you with a basis for a compelling essay, but it’s not a “hook.”

Being in a single-parent household, or raised by someone who is not a parent, isn’t a big deal these days. In some neighborhoods, it’s the norm - and yes, those kids have to assume more responsibility faster in many cases. Loss of a parent is also not that unusual, unfortunately. However, if you think your situation has given you a unique perspective, has been important in shaping who you are and hope to be, and/or you are bi-cultural, it is definitely worth talking about.
