is he smart?

i have a friend who pulled of 3 years of a high school with very little studying and hardwork. He did his homework last minute, and the only time he studied was for midterms and i mean, sometimes for really important tests also. but most of the time he was not stressed, and did not work hard AT ALL. his gpa was a 3.3 unweighted even though he rarely tried..

is he smart?

Not working much isn't smart. Sure, if you don't have to study and you can still pull off a 4.0 in all APs, then go for it. But not working and getting a 3.3 (which is easily improved) is kind of silly. It's just one of those habits that will eventually bite a person in the butt once college/real life hits.

I didn't work for the majority of my classes up to this year, but I can already see some of the negative side-effects. (Even if I do have a good GPA, it's still not smart because it made my first semester senior year more difficult than necessary).

the high school system is no way to measure intelligence. A complete idiot can get a 4.0...

Probably above average. Top 15% percent? Can't be sure.

lol, NA has a point...

you don't know how hard he is working at home. he just "seems" to not be working hard.

In a lot of math/sciency courses, if you understand the concepts behind what you're learning, you can take all the tests you want and never have to study for them and always get As. (It basically comes down to having learned it before.)
