Hi everyone!
My school offers AP Chemistry, but It is one of the craziest APs at my school and Honors Chemistry isn’t offered at my school, so I was thinking of taking Honors Chemistry online through an accredited online high school next year. Would taking one year of Honors Chemistry online fulfill the 1 year of chemistry requirement that quite a few colleges look for? I’m not planning on taking AP Chem thru my school b/c that class consumes all of peoples’ free time at my school.
Btw my schedule for next year (junior year) is: AP Bio, AP Eng. Lang., APUSH, Computer Graphical Interfaces(honors/post-ap), Honors Precalculus, AP Spanish Lang(online b/c scheduling problems w/ taking it thru school ), AP Human Geo(online), Honors Chemistry(Online)
Thx,
If the course is approved and includes a chemistry lab portion (if it’s online, some require you to buy a lab kit and do them by yourself at home for the course to be approved) then it should be fine. If you’re not looking to advance in Chemistry, that’s perfectly fine. You should focus on subjects you want to do. Ask your counselor about approved courses. Lots of science classes (that require labs) online are not approved so you should check that.
The course isn’t UC Approved, but it is NCAA approved. I was told by my counselor that the UC schools I apply to would still consider the chemistry course as a year of chemistry, but they wouldn’t consider the course as honors. Should I still take the course or no?
Yeah, if they would still accept the course, that’s fine. I don’t think it’s that important that they don’t consider it as honors. It will be really useful, well depending on what you want to major in. Also, make sure you can handle it since it seems like you’re taking a lot of weighted classes next year and AP Human Geo online.
If you can handle all of those ^ then all the more power to you, though since they’re all weighted, maybe take it over the summer if you have more time then? Or dial back on the weighted classes? Good luck!
Can you take normal chemistry? It should be a breeze and will help mitigate the workload of all those APs.
Chemistry is usually considered a pre-req for AP Bio. If this online course isn’t recognized as honors anyhow, why not just take regular chemistry at your high school? You really can’t get proper lab experience in an online course anyhow.
I go to an independent school that doesn’t offer general chem :(, so I wanted to take chem online.
Good idea! Thanks for the suggestion
