I just logged onto Cal Housing and saw this:

Residence Hall 08-09 Academic Year (08/24/2008 - 05/22/2009)
Applied: 04/08/2008
Room Reservation: DE-4xx-2
Not Complete

Application Phase 2 hasn't begun yet. But I was just speculating..(sure find that a lot over here), and could DE-4xx-2 possibly mean Deutsch in Unit 1? I asked two other friends what their application says, and one got Room Reservation: FB-6xx-7 (possibly Freeborn?) and PU-5xx-6 (Putnam?). Sorry, I'm an overexcited incoming freshman :)

The person who discovered this I think really has figured it out. In looking at my son's room number description for next year (he'll be a sophmore and was able to select his room), his room number jives with what you are saying. So based on that, let me explain what it means.

Let's say you get a mini double (or triple) suite in Christian. And got assigned to Room 312. For the mini suites, there's an "A" or a "B" following the three numbers, because there are two rooms in the mini suite Room 312 -- room "A" and room "B". Then the bed number is assigned, which would be -1, -2, or -3. (It doesn't stick you with a particular bed, it's just for numbering).

So it would look like this on the housing website: CN-312B-1

Using that formula, you will be able to determine what floor you're on (in the above case, on the third floor), the dorm building, etc.

So for Castel, he/she should be in Priestly (unit 3), on the 5th floor, bed 1.

Hope this explanation helps.

Btw, if you guys are really ingenious, you could find on the net a link to the location of the rooms in a particular dorm, and figure out if you'll be street side or courtyard side.
