Is Independent Study Helpful for Graduate School Application?

Per the title. As far as I understand, an independent study counts as research experience.
Thus, it should be helpful for getting accepted into a grad school - right?

It depends on what you actually do. An independent study could be a research experience, or it could be more like a class.
