Is is true the GTech does not consider major when admitting students?

Heard someone mention this in another thread and just wanted to confirm if it was true

Yes, choice of major is not a consideration for admission.

@itsv thank you! Does this mean that the top 33% or so of the applicant pool are accepted?

I got admitted to the College of Engineering for Mechanical Engineering in Georgia Tech. However, I would like to major in Computer Science which is under the College of Computing. Is it possible to change my college? If yes. should I do it now or once I go to the university?

Yes you can change and you can do it now or when you go. Tech is very flexible about changing majors. You can do the change at your FASET.

I really don’t know how accurate this statement is. Think about it…in our GT supplements we all probably make some mention as to what major we wish to pursue. I would think that, in some way, the major choice does play a factor, especially if you’re applying for the more competitive majors such as computer science. Idk though that’s just my two cents.

What I understood is that you are admitted to your intended major but don’t formally have to declare it until two years in. That means you take classes in your major from the beginning BUT you have the freedom to change majors down the road if you decide you’re on the wrong path. You might need to take extra classes in your new major to catch up. If you are certain you want to switch now I recommend you contact admissions and ask them if it is possible to do it before the fall so you can start off with the correct intro classes. But I would think that they must look at your intended major upon admission so they don’t have a freshman class of only industrial engineers or CS kids.

Thanks a lot for all your inputs. I emailed the admission counselor and she replied very quickly. She told me I just have to use the change my major link in my buzzport account and they will make the change in a couple of days. I can even change it in FASET but its better to change early.
