Is it a bad idea to have a GC call?

I am waitlisted at Duke and UVA. Is it a bad idea to have a guidance counselor call the admission office and ask why I am waitlisted, how the applicants are offered places from the waitlist, whether schools waitlisting me means denying acceptance or delaying admission, etc.?

can't hurt you, although they willmost likely tell you what they tell everyone

"we have too few spots for too many qualified applicants"

this call is more helpful if you are deferred ED, to help boost your other apps, or to know what else to send the school

You and/or the GC could call. If you call, ask if if your application was lacking in some area - if you can actually chat with the person, you may be able to come up with a clue as to which additional materials would be appropriate to send.

I wish you the best on this - just be aware that coming off a waitlist is a pretty low probability event.
