Is it a beach or not?

I just got some brochures in the mail from UCSD. There's a picture of the campus, and it looks to be extremely close to the ocean.

Is it walking distance from the campus to the ocean? Is the water area closed off, or is it a public beach? Are people allowed to swim there?

the closest beach to campus is Black's: http://www.surfline.com/travel/surfmaps/surfspot.cfm?id=109

It's about a 5-10 min. walk to the main gate at the top of the cliff from most places on campus, then about a 10 minute walk to the sand. Not too bad but the walk back up is brutal...you can always take the bus to la jolla shores or torrey pines if you're not down for a major leg burn.

you can see the ocean from the colleges that are located on the west side of the campus (erc, tgm, muir), especially if you're on higher ground. the beach here is awesome! you should totally try kayaking or go swimming near the caves. tis quite cool :] i believe la jolla beaches are protected, or so i heard.

It IS pretty close to the ocean. I'm in ERC and my balcony has an ocean view! It's pretty nice waking up to that and being able to watch the sunset over the ocean everyday!

And the walk to black's isn't bad at all. Most of the time my friends and I go to black's beach, we drive--so the beach ends up being like two minutes away haha. If you're in decent shape you'll be able to make the walk back up...no biggie.

lol, when I visited the beach is like the backyard

yes. beach is very close. my dorm room has an excellent oceanview.
