I'm a Bio Sci Major and I'm worried that if I do work study, I cant maintain a high GPA. However, I here in college, there is more free time. According to MyAid, I am only offered $1,500 in work study, I need the money and its only an average of working 6 hours a week. I'm thinking that if I do work study, I could get a head start in gaining letter of recommendations, experience with a job, and gain connections that could be usefull. Is it worth it to go for work study?

Have you already found a job with the workstudy? Some employers will be flexible because they know you are a student.

What classes will you be taking?

It is definitely worth it to get a job. Not just for the money, but for the experience, the addition to the resume, networking, etc.

I do see the reason for your hesitance, since you are a Bio Major.

I had a WS job this past year as a freshman- (current major: undeclared; planning to transfer to Business Admin or Business Econ).

I worked from 5-9 hours a week, depending on my quarter.

Its definitely doable, and if you need time to study, you can always contact your co-workers to cover for you.

I ended with almost a 3.8 this year. But that is because a lot of the classes I took were entry-level,pre-reqs or for GE’s.

Junshik,
I plan to take Bio Sci 93, Chem 1 A, Hum 1A, Bio 2A

It seems possible, but I havent been in the class yet to really know…
How easy is it to find a work study job?

uhmm can someone explain what work study is…
thanks

ceepeace,

It probably is doable.

It is relatively easy to find a WS. Use this site:

zotlink.com

and I don’t know if you have your ID # yet, but you would have to sign in, and just look for WS jobs. It’s that simple. Demand for WS students are always high because the employer pays only a fraction of your salary.

Along this vein, how difficult is it to get a job at UCI when you aren’t eligible for workstudy?
