If I have faced economic hardship is it good to write it for the main essay for elite schools? Or should I use that as a supplemental essay?

While I don't know the exact answer to your question, it needs to be geared more towards how you overcame it and what it was that you gained from the experience. If its important towards telling your story and will tell the reader about you, I can't see why it wouldnt work. I mean, really, anything can work for an essay topic. Finding a rock, winning a competition, falling down the stairs, reading a book, creating a method for dating crocodile teeth (some kids EC on some featured article)... can all be crafted to show what you learned and tell something unique about it. Whetrher monumental or ordinary, anything can be crafted into a good essay.

While it could possibly work it would have to be focused on learning from and overcoming difficulties. it couldn't sound at all complaining.
