Is it a good thing that Brown contacts counselors for ED applicants?

So, basically it’s 1:34 in the morning, and I’m going crazy thinking about the 11th while procrastinating studying for my AP Biology test which I will probably fail.

Anyways, it is a good sign (not thing, wow, I realized how terrible sounding that was…) that Brown calls the guidance counselors of certain applicants? Because I asked my counselor and she said she didn’t hear from them…and I’m starting to get extremely paranoid. And I know from the posts on this discussion board that some counselors have been asked about quarter grades, etc.

Why do they pick certain people to call/not call? Does that mean that admissions is “on the fence” about someone, or does that mean they are already in since Brown is showing interest in them? If someone could help me out, that would be greatly appreciated. :)

I go to a fairly prestigious small school and our college counselor knows what he's doing... he told us that the calls really aren't an indication of who is on the fence/definitely getting in/definitely getting rejected/anything.

It might just have to do with school size-- if they know your counselor doesn't have 2345356543 kids to deal with, they'll call. There are 60 kids in my grade and all ED applicants to non-public universities get calls.

Not true. I go to a public school with around 400 kids in my grade. They called for my grades.

It's quite possible that they call if they have a question about you....probably something innocent, like how your GPA works or if something in your recommendation wasn't quite clear. It's unlikely that they would call to express interest in you've applied ED, since they've got nothing to gain by letting you know they're interested, unlike RD where you might be flattered that they want you.
GOOD LUCK and stay calm

I admit, I have no idea what it meant when I heard they asked. They didn't ask for everyone's of who applied ED but, in general, it's fair to say the process is incredibly random. It also doesn't make me hopeful that my first quarter grades weren't great! I think not being asked means that you're probably on one side of the spectrum or the other, but if your counselor doesn't think it means anything he knows best. My counselor was excited!

They can call for a host of reasons. Typically they would not call if a student has been put in the denied pile -- unless they call to explain why (i.e., to explain why a valedictorian was rejected while a lower-ranked student accepted). I think calls are made if you are a serious contender and there is a question raised when reading your application. Since many serious contenders don't get accepted, a call doesn't mean much.

Yeah, I can't imagine Brown having any kind of an "auto-admit" so maybe it's a good indication of being a "semi-finalist," if you will. I know kids who sent their grades anyway. I don't the grades make a difference. They probably know more or less whom they want to accept and whom they don't.

If they have a question about something on your app or how your school's system works, they'll call. If they feel that's all squared away and clear from the app, they won't.

Doesn't indicate anything.

brown called my gc YESTERDAY asking for first marking period grades.....so i guess this doesn't mean anything significant? btw i go to a public school with about 190 kids in my graduating class and i'm the only one applying to brown ed if that has anything to do with it...

I was worried about this too... my grade has only ~45 kids and no one called my counselor. :(

Brown is probably finished making decisions, which scares me. A lot. If they wanted your grades this late, it can only be a good sign, but does anyone know for sure what it actually means?

man that makes me nervous...no1 called my counselor...that scares me

see, I sent them my quarter grades before Thanksgiving because I did really well this quarter. So I don't think I'll be getting a call...

I got a call..... Ahhhh lol My class have over 700 kids and I am the only one applying early, to anywhere. I live in a kinda of bad area so we don't have many kids going to college, let alone a top school.

Brown called my counselor Friday morning and requested my first quarter grades. My class has only about 269 students, but I'm the only person who applied ED to Brown. In fact, I think I'm the only person who applied ED anywhere. o_O

My quarter grades are HORRENDOUS. T_T
And I'm in college classes so they don't report for quarter.....Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkk.

Time to talk to my counselor?

They called mine on Dec 2, and by chance I saw her walking around campus, so she let me know they called. I was peeved cuz my last marking period's grades weren't up to my usual standards...

She seemed happy, but mostly because she has a lot of faith in me. Didn't make any comment whether the call was a good or bad thing. I assumed it was negative, because they wanted to see more (and then saw the low grade in that one evil class).

We can do some fun statistical analysis of this in LESS THAN TWO DAYS HOLY $#!%!!!!!!

It seems like a lot of people are getting calls. Did anyone not get a call? Or at least not aware of one made.

I didn't get a call, but my gc submitted my Q1 grades awhile ago because the school ususally does that anyways.

Class of 97, I'm the only one that applied ED to Brown, and they did indeed call my GC last week. We do 'trimester' grades within each semester, so they got the second trimester grades.
