Is it a waste for top Ivy-League students

to work at regular "jobs" their high school AND 1st, 2nd years of college?

I have friends (and me, somewhat) that do not do internships in the summer. Instead, they get a job at Walmart or Borders. Throughout high school and first years of college.

I know it's not as good compared to the internship-kids, but when it's time for them and me to apply to big-companies and big-jobs, will it be very damaging?

There is something to be said for the good old fashion work ethic. You work at Walmart or Borders or delivering papers or waitressing or whatever to earn a buck to help you to finish your education.
In my book, that is worth a thousand internships.

You aren't expected to have an internship that early. Yeah, it helps with getting an internship junior year, but it's not very damaging if you don't.

My first summer out of Cornell right now - working the same job I've had for 4 years at a local Golf/Country Club (although I'm an assistant manager now).

I am definitely planning on doing something more relevant for the next two summers though.

I mean as long as you don't sit around teh entire summer doing nothing, you be alrite.
