is it ABSOLUTELY necesary? help PLEASE!

ok, so my friend is in a bit of a bind

she doesn't have a SS#, if you get my drift.

But she REALLY wants to go to college; is it absolutely necessary to provide a ss# for entrance?

She realizes that she won't be eligable for scholarships, because she cannot fill out fafsa, but will she still be able to enroll and be accepted?

Thanks ^_^

Usually an applicant can refuse to provide SSN and then they will give you a number to identify the applicant. However, that does not answer the question as to whether she can attend college and whether, if she can, she will be entitled to pay in-state tuition at a public university. The rules vary among the states and colleges as to what an illegal alien can do and what they must tell the college and I assume that is the situation you are describing.

Publis schools general require your SS# (at least U Tennessee does) but some schools don't- though most of those schools require you to state your citizenship status. I guess you could lie, but on the common app you have to swear in blood that everything's true...

That's a really difficult situation, meep...

How are her stats? What level of college is she looking at?

Public Us in general aren’t allowed to give her financial aid because she does not have PR status. However, depending on the state, she may be eligible for in-state tuition.

The most competitive private Us, if she is admitted, can provide her institutional monies to meet her need. However, note that she will be competing in the international pool.

are you sure you’re competing internationally?
i don’t have a SSN either, and i will have lived in america for 11 years by the time i apply
we are still waiting on our PR status and such
i don’t think colleges would match you against international applicants if you’ve gone through a u.s. school system

Non-PRs aren’t eligible for federal aid, and unis typically have only a set small amount set aside for international applicants. Ergo, you are competing for financial aid with a bunch of other internationals.

By law, you do not need to hand over your SS number to anyone except for firms or people that are involved in your taxes. Banks require them too.

Get an Identification number from your college and you will be fine to attend.
