I'm really confused as to with the Early Decision it states you may not apply anywhere else ED. Does that mean I can still apply to non-single choice uni using Early Action as well?

I'm definately going to apply Princeton ED and I'm wondering if I can also apply EA to Chicago...

No, you cannot apply to Princeton ED and other EA programs whether they are single-choice or not. Other ED programs may have different rules, e.g. Northwestern ED allows other EA applications but obviously not ED.

You need to check with both the ED and EA school - every school's rules are different. Check the websites, or better yet, make an anonymous call to each admissions office (my son did this on the advice of his school counselor, because it was not at all clear if it was permissible or not).

Brown clearly states that you cannot apply Eanything anywhere else if you intend to apply there ED. Read the application material carefully-each school will post their policy. Doing so may jeopardize your acceptance.

my counsellor told me that its possible to apply to both ED and EA. the thing is that if you get accepted to ED, you have to go there even if you like the EA school better.

bonobono, the GC was wrong. As noted, there is a lot of variety on this issue, so you have to check with individual schools. The counselor was right, however, in telling you that if you're accepted ED you must attend (some exceptions, but apparently it can get extremely messy if you try to renege on an ED acceptance). So if you apply ED somewhere you have to be absolutely mentally ready to attend if accepted.

Depending on the ED school's policies (see the example of Princeton's above), you may be breaking their rules if you apply EA to another school, and should they find out somehow, they'd be within their rights to rescind your ED admission offer. (I have no idea how often this occurs, but do you really want to take the chance?) Additionally, any counselor encouraging or allowing a student to apply both ED and EA where the ED school does not allow this is risking damaging the reputation of the school for future students' admissions.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. And I think I'd do my own research on what that GC says in future.

I agree. Brown states that you CANNOT apply EA, EE, ED to any other school if you apply ED to them. If they find out the acceptance will be void. Is it really worth the chance? Your guidance counselor is giving you the wrong info.

Many schools permit you to apply EA at the same time as you are applying ED, but other schools do not. You absolutely must check (and double check) the websites and the applications.

We ran into this situation when considering an ED application to Brown. We had not found any mention on the website but a perusal of the application showed that this was their policy. A quick call to the Admissions Office confirmed that you can not apply to anywhere else "early" if you do a Brown ED application. There is a thread devoted to this in the Brown forum from a month or so ago.

And when you read the fine print, also check carefully for deadlines. For some schools, your app needs to be postmarked by a certain date; for others, your app needs to be IN THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE by a certain date.

Thankyou all for your time. I guess the moral of the story is as Little Mother puts it "read the fine print". Princeton doesn't allow you to send any other early applications. However schools like Cornell do allow you so you could mix Cornell ED with Uchicago EA.

Anyways. Thankyou all for your help
All the best
