Is it appropriate to email a teacher before class starts to ask for a syllabus?

Sure. The worst they can do is ignore you or say no.

No - wait until the first day of the class - what’s your rush?

It depends on the reason. I’ve never had an issue, but I’ve never done it just because.

Have you checked your “blackboard” or “moodle” or other CMS?

Why do you want the syllabus early? Is it to buy books or for some other reason?

It’s perfectly acceptable.

One time I was registering for a summer class (which are very expensive and not covered by financial aid) and the syllabus wasn’t online. So I emailed the prof and told her of my interest and that since the class is a huge time and financial investment, could she send me the syllabus. She sent it to me and I ended up acing the class. :D

If there are two classes you might want to take that are scheduled at the same time, it would be useful to have the syllabus in advance. But otherwise I agree, the OP should just wait.

If you go to school hundreds of miles away, it would be useful to ask for a syllabus in order to figure out when your finals are. That way, you can book plane tickets home earlier and at cheaper prices.
