I really don’t know where to ask about this, and I really don’t know what to give if it is okay.
I am writing my personal statement for UCs and one of my professor is helping me with it. I go to her office once a week and she gives me some advice after reading it. I also asked her for a recommendation letter for next quarter and she said yes. I am not in her class anymore, but I took her class for two quarters in the past. She really helped me a lot since the first quarter, so I want to give her a small gift after submitting UC application.
Is it okay to give a professor a small gift? If so, can you recommend something for it? I am an international student and I have no idea what I should give to her. I think my professor is in her 40s.
Yes, you could but not until you are accepted into a UC or other place. In other words, if she’s writing you a letter (obviously not for the UCs, as they don’t accept them - but elsewhere) don’t get her a gift before she writes it, and I frankly wouldn’t even do it until acceptances come out, so it’s all kosher and finalized. Then you should write a nice thank you note and if you want to add some flowers, do it then. But don’t go overboard with the flowers. I suppose you could send a thank you prior to acceptance, but no flowers until after.
Agreed.
Oh okay I will wait until acceptances come out. Do you have any other recommendations besides flowers? She is a part time professor, so she doesn’t have her own office.
Well I am always partial to a movie pass gift card. People always like those.
I agree that I would wait until after acceptances come out. A nice thank you card with where you’ll be going and a small gift card seems great to me.
