I just graduated high school and I’m going to a local community college for two years and then transferring to a four year university. I’m very interested in bioengineering and UIUC is one of my top choices because they have a very good engineering program, however, UIUC says they aren’t accepting transfer students for bioengineering. Does anybody know if there is any way I can try to get in? Or at least know who to contact about this matter?
Thanks.
Hello!
My name is Denzel and I’m an incoming freshman going to UIUC for Bioengineering. I’ve heard many different stories about the transferring to UIUC’s bioengineering program. So here’s what I’ve heard.
A post I’ve seen on the Internet said that they only accept the amount of transfers to those who leave the bioengineering program at UIUC. And from what they said, that number is in the single digits. So the expectation is that it’s very competitive. Might not be true, but something to start with.
The college of engineering website at UIUC says that the program does not accept transfers, but I imagine that they are referring to people outside of the college of engineering attempting to get into the college and program.
Still, the College of Engineering gives priority transfer to the people in the college who selected engineering undeclared, who gets first dibs for transfers within the college.
Also, I would check with your community college if there is a engineering transferring program with a University’s engineering program. I know a friend from school who is going to a community college for two years then automatically transferring to UIUC for Aerospace Engineering (not the same, but similar situation, kind of) through a pathways program between the community college and UIUC.
All in all, I would contact the Bioengineering Undergraduate Program Coordinator and Academic Advisor, Kerri Green, as she would give much more clarification to your questions. She can be reached at (217) 333-9661 or kgreen0@illinois.edu
I assume you understand that admission for the bioengineering program at UIUC is extremely competitive. So maintain an extremely high level of academics and a strong well-rounded resume of extracurriculars. The harsh truth is that there will be many many applicants looking for a very small number of openings, if any, in the bioengineering program. You’ll need to make yourself look like the cream of the crop. I wish the best of luck and hope to see you in two years!
Best of luck,
Denzel
