For a few fields in the Common App (highest degree you intend to earn? career interest?), there is an "undecided" option. If I am truly "undecided" as to all of this, and answer as such, will that negatively affect my application? I'm worried that I'll come off as indecisive and directionless...

My sons are applying and they both will list “undecided” because at this point, they are. Some people might look at this the way you fear (i.e.“This person is directionless.”)

However others might simply take you at your word that you are truly undecided. Admissions Counselors know that many students will change their majors something like three times during their college careers. It could be argued that it is just as negative for a 17 year old to consider themselves a finished product and that they know exactly what they’re going to do with the rest of their lives.

In a word: no

no it’s not bad to be undecided. one example is that most colleges don’t require a major before junior year, because they know that you’re still young, and haven’t discovered precisely what you want to do. so if you are undecided, put that!

thank you!

Let me just warn you, for some schools it’s easier to get in as an undecided frosh. In some schools it’s very hard. Keep that it mind, learn what each school likes.
