I've taken Chinese freshman-junior year and I'm doing my scheduling for senior year. I plan to take a couple AP's and I could probably find room for Chinese IV, but I just don't want to do it. I'm never going to go to China or use it in the profession I am looking at. I have planned to drop it but my teacher told me it looks good for colleges to see that you've stuck with it for all 4 years. Is this true?

I’m generally in the same situation. I will continue my language independently, but it doesn’t fit in my schedule for senior year. Yeah, it looks good, but it’s not a make/break. Most schools only require 2 years. 3 years is enough, especially if you do not have any long term interest in it.

It’s best to go for 4 years. I dropped Latin my senior year because my teacher left, but I feel like it would have looked better if I continued.

That said, if you really don’t like it, don’t do it. Three years is fine, don’t waste your time on something you dislike if you don’t have to.

I didn’t take a language senior year and did pretty well in admissions if I do say so myself.

I took Spanish 4 junior year and then opted out of Spanish 5 for senior year so I know how you feel.

If you think the language is not going to help you later in your life, drop it! I am going to drop French next year too!

I’m pretty certain I’m never going to use Chinese in my life, but I’m worried that colleges will think I’m not committed when I’m just saving myself from a wasted class.

I was in Spanish 4 my Senior year, and then dropped it within the first week. I was done with foreign language.

It didn’t seem to be a problem for any colleges, as I got accepted to every college that I applied to, including University of Michigan! :)

Basically, don’t stress over it. If you don’t want to do it, then don’t.

My brother dropped Spanish senior year (though he took AP Spanish junior) and he got into Stanford. So, as long as language isn’t your hook, I think you’re fine.

I went up to French IV and dropped it senior year. I don’t think it affected my app significantly…I still got into UPenn, Duke, and a few other top 20 schools. Then again, I did get rejected by HPSM but I doubt it was b/c of the language requirement (those schools were a HUGE reach anyways).

I’m definitely interested in the math/science field. I found out today that I can’t take AP Physics E&M so I have room for this in my schedule, but I’m still probably going to try to find some other class to put in.

Idiots. China is taking over the world. Why would you not learn Chinese?
