Is it ok to send more than the required/recommended recs? I read somewhere that you should only submit the number that it asks for. Is that true? Would it be okay to send two when it asks for one?

It depends on the school and on the content of the extra recs. Some schools don't mind supplementary recs as long as they add another dimension of your personality to the application. Others get so much paperwork that they discourage applicants from sending in extra stuff. Even at those schools, I'm sure there are people who send in extra recs anyway.

Before you send in the extra rec, though, ask yourself whether the additional teacher rec will add something new to the file. Will it reveal a totally different side of you? Or will it be just another rec filled with the same warm praise that your other teachers gave you? Is it just a list of your activities and how good of a student you are?

If the third rec will make you stand out in some way and says something that's not found in the others, then you should send it in. But if not, there isn't much point.

Edit: Although, if you're applying to a school like JHU where they only require one but recommends two, you should definitely send in two.

I wouldn't do it; you don't want to swamp the admissions office with more than they need(a lot of private universities are very clear about that). I think if they didn't get your letter of rec, they'd contact you.

i heard that sending an extra rec could seem like you're not confident about the quality of the others and if one of your recs are not as good as the others it may bring the others down
