Is it bad to skip class if...?

Your teacher is pretty awful at lecturing? I skip and learn by myself.

Should I still go? I just feel bad that I’m wasting my parents’ money technically. :stuck_out_tongue:

That depends on a few factors:

  1. Does the professor take attendance and does attendance impact your grade?
  2. Have you had an exam in that class? Some professors may have additional lecture material that is not in your books, and that material can end up on a test?
  3. How do you plan on spending that time?

I don’t skip classes, even if the professor is terrible at lecturing. It does not benefit me to skip and I see it as a waste of money. I would also hate to miss a last minute change or assignment because I decided not to go to class on a regular basis.

If you’re confident you can do just as well (if not better) in the class without attending lecture then there are better uses of your time. Definitely consider the factors in post #1. Another factor to consider is letters of recs (definitely attend classes of potential letter writers!). You may not get to know them well in lecture but many will notice if they have seen you frequently or not.

I don’t skip classes either because if you find out just how much per hour in a class you’re paying for tuition it’s quite a lot. But if you can spend your time doing something else beneficial and do as well in the class then why not?

Don’t skip classes, participate enthusiastically even if you think the lecturer is boring. Get to know him/her in office hours if you are having any trouble, or even if you aren’t. You NEVER know which connection you make is going to be an important one, and sometimes they come from unlikely people. Don’t burn bridges.

Besides, aren’t you in college to go to class and study? That should be your priority.

Your school probably offers a lot of services that you don’t use because they wouldn’t benefit you. I don’t think you’d be wasting money by skipping lectures that really didn’t benefit you, but in most cases they’re more helpful than they seem. Hearing the terminology is helpful even if you don’t really understand it in class.

It’s really up to you.

I had a few classes in undergrad that I consistently skipped because I didn’t find the lectures beneficial. It was more beneficial for me to use that time for other things.

I still got a LOT out of my education and I am now in a phd program so it must’ve been OK for me.

Also do they every have in class quizzes? Do they give points for class participation? Is there attendance requirements? Look in your syllabus.
Also you know what the prof is emphasizing in class
