Is it bad to take the SAT more than 3 times?

Topic^^^^?

Plenty of my friends do it, it's common practice with people applying to Japanese colleges, but I have no clue how it goes with American colleges. Their scores did improve after the third test.

If you show real improvement, it's not the greatest thing in the world but not that bad.

OTOH, if you're prepping so much that you can't do real things with your life (both ECs and just... living), it's time to reconsider your priorities.

Take the SAT as many times as you need to get the score YOU want. As long as you prepare in earnest, it is worthwhile pursuing a higher score. Taking it repeatedly WITHOUT better preparation is futile.

No college will ever GIVE you more points -or send you a sugar cookie- because you refrained to take it less than 3 times. On the other hand, chances are that a low-level clerical hired gun will transpose your highest scores on the admission folder that will be reviewed by a real adcom. Adcoms are busy enough analyzing the important information in your folder that they won't agonize over deciphering your exact number of standardized test's sittings.
