Should I pull out the thesaurus?

Yeah. a thesaurus can help replace words so you don't sound redundant, but make sure to only use words you know, otherwise it will sound out of place and not like your writing. But don't rely on long words to get your point across. Simple words, if arrange correctly to convey a point can be more powerful than plugging in a thesaurus word.

No thesaurus, please! I'd say go for balance. Don't write the whole essay using "I" to start every sentence, but don't use big words you're going to fumble either. Big words aren't impressive unless they come naturally (and then only if the writer's voice is clear, and big words are consistent with that voice). Voice rules all.

EDIT: cross-posted, I basically agree with Cassandra. I'd say only to correct egregious repetition, though.
