Is it bad to write about a random experience that isn't related to an EC or Academics/intellectual interest, it's just a nice interesting story that reflects personality and flair.

I plan on writing more academic based for Supplements.

I'm just wondering whether this will hurt or should it just be better to focus on something academic??

you can write about anything. I’ve read some truly obscure essays, but they showed me a lot about the people that wrote it. I, personally, am also writing about an experience that’s fairly random. However, it is not random to me. Everyone I know has looked at me like I’m crazy when I tell them the topic, but after they read it, they understand why I chose it.

So as long as you pen it in a way that shows them what you want them to see, you’ll do great.

There’s a reason why Common App has the “Topic of your choice” as an option.

Yeah that’s true. I’ve just saw a lot of model essays which were about the person’s intellectual interests so I was a bit worried.

Thanks!

If it is well written and shows more about you than talking about your ECs or academic interests, then go for it. After all, you’ve already told them about your ECs and academics, but they know nothing about the random parts of your life.
