Is it bad to write about my seizures? I have been diagnosed with epilepsy but I pretty much function like a normal person. I have a perfect GPA, am in the top 10 percent of my class, do computer art competitions, and do sports like soccer and martial arts. I want to apply to ivy league colleges, but I'm not sure if I should write about my seizures. They aren't really a big deal to other people because when I have my seizures I don't convulse and I am on medication that helps for the most part so now my seizures are rare. In the past they caused more problems for me though, so it makes a fairly good essay in terms of explaining hardships. My mother isn't sure its a good idea though, because she thinks they'll think I'm disabled and unable to do work if I write about my seizures even though I have said they don't hurt me much anymore except I have become more efficient so I can sleep earlier than my friends

If you scores are as good as you say they are, I think you’ll be fine. If you’re planning on writing about how it changed you and how you’ve continued in academic excllence in spite of that, then thats fine. Writing about what sets you apart from the crowd what you’ve learned from it is always good. I say go for it.

A friend of mine wrote about her experiences with epilepsy and got into her top choice school. You can write a great essay on any topic, but I would caution away from writing about a topic that has little bearing about you as a person, and since you hint at it not being such a problem now perhaps there is a better topic for you?

On the otherhand if it really has been a major hardship I’d say go for it. It certainly won’t shine a bad light on you if you’ve managed to do so well despite all difficulty and if you can carry the essay somewhere I see no harm.

Dont make it sound too much like a sob story.

If it’s a sob story, don’t bother. If it’s about how your seizures have inspired you to become a doctor or scientist or to do things to help others with epilepsy, then that could be a good essay subject.

There are no bad topics, only poor essays. I think you need to ask yourself what you will write about if, as you say, your seizures have not been an issue for many years. While it is possible to write about things from your earlier years, make sure what you write about is relevant to your years in high school. Remember that your essay should be about who you are now and what strengths you will bring to the campus next fall. If you think writing about seizures will help you show that in your essay, go ahead with it. I agree with above post that if your seizures inspired a certain field of study you intend to pursue in college that you can write about them.

What would you wrute about them? If you can use this topic to show what exceptional talents and interests you will bring to the school, sure, you can write about anything that accomplishes that.

Well, when I say in the past, I was actually only diagnosed with epilepsy in around 8th grade, so I’ve still dealt with it mostly in high school. My seizures mainly have improved me in areas like work ethic, because I actually work the opposite of my friends and I basically do my projects and essays immediately when I get them, so I’m really efficient now. I was going to talk about how I went to the hospital for a while last summer and I had to share rooms with all these people who actually convulse or their seizures have made them unable to do things so I can see that I’m better off. I don’t know if that would make it sob story ish. If it is, I guess I can write about something else. I just wanted to because it has kind of been an irritation throughout high school because I’ve never been able to hang out late, finish things late, and I’m actually probably going to maybe go into surgery in January, so I’m maybe graduating early for it. Even though my seizures are mainly under control under medicine, the medication I’m on makes me really depressed so the doctors want me to have surgery. I think it may be too much of a sob story though so I’ll consider somethign else.
