Is it better or worse to apply to a less popular program?

<p>I'm finishing at community college and looking to transfer to a 4 year university.
I am a fairly good student overall (2000 SAT, 3.5ish GPA) but my big interest is languages.
I'm the 'star' of my mandarin class, so I'm not worried about a reference.</p>

<p>Is it better or worse if I apply for a Mandarin Chinese major when most people applying are Comp Sci/Engineer/Nursing/Psychology/Creative Writing/Graphic design/anything but a language?</p>

<p>Applying for unpopular majors is always a plus; colleges need people to fill out those departments. Just do be sure that it’s something your passionate about, because it’s probably not going to be very easy for you to switch majors as a transfer student.</p>
