Is it better to declare a major or apply undecided?

If i were to declare a major it would be art, but I'm not sure if my portfolio is good enough for it to be my major, which is why I'm thinking would it be better to apply undecided. Does anyone have any insight in this!?

Have you asked yourself if you should really major in Art? I mean I’m sure you could eventually get a degree in Art but those who eventually do it as a profession are already ooozing pieces and examples, even as HS students.

Declare a major! You can always change. But it’s better to show you have some determination and/or know yourself well enough to pick something.

I disagree. My HYP alma mater’s entering Freshman class (they should be arriving to campus any day now) has about 1/6 with undeclared majors. It didn’t hurt them any.

Whether you should apply as undecided on state a major depends, in part, on the college to which you are applying for admission. Some colleges welcome undecided majors and other colleges prefer (some even require) that applicants select a major on their application.

If you are applying to schools via the Common Application, this question is in the Future Plans section of the Common App; the questions in this section are catered for each school. So if you apply to multiple schools using the Common App, your answer to the “Academic Interest” question can vary depending on the school to which you are applying. So you could apply as an Arts major to some schools and as undecided to other schools.
