During freshman year I got all As and Bs in my honors classes. But sophomore year I got all Cs and one low B in my honors classes. I was lazy that year and promise myself that I'll do better next year. But considering this, should I still take honors classes junior year, even if my grades the previous year weren't the best? Is it better to take hard classes and get Cs or take regular instead? I've been in accelerated classes for years. just how much does this affect my gpa? These are my grades throughout high school so far:

freshman year:
English I Honors - 91
World History Honors - 91
Culinary Arts/ Personal Finance- 95
Orchestra - 95
Algebra I Honors- 85
PE/ Health I - 85
Earth/Space Science Honors- 86
French II -86

Sophomore year:
English II Honors- 79 (got lazzy)
Geometry Honors-77 (had bad teacher)
PE/ Health II- 82
Sociology- 95
US History I Honors - 76 (had bad teacher)
Art I - 94
Biology Honors- 81
French III- 79 ( boring subject)

junior year- what i'm thinking of taking
English III Honors
Chemistry Honors
US History II (honors- don't know yet)
Algebra II
PE/Health III
Human Anatomy/Physiology
Art II
Art III

Should I take those classes next year? :/ I dunno. Do these grades sound bad for college? XD

What sounds bad is your attribution of poor grades to multiple “bad teachers” and “boring subject”. Suggest you give some thought to your responsibility for your grades. Maybe you have a learning difference that could be identified? An honest talk with your high school counselor may be appropriate.

Cs will keep you out of most selective colleges, but open admission and community colleges may be options if you decide to try to go to college. But anticipate landing in remedial college classes for a year or two before you are ready to take actual college level classes if you are getting Cs now and cannot bring them up this year.

I don’t think you should be blaming other people or subject material for low grades - though in isolated incidents, a teacher might be the reason for a low grade, I doubt you’ve had a large amount of bad teachers that attribute to all of your C’s. One C, yes, maybe, but not multiple C’s.

If you miss an A in a class by a point, sure, blame the teacher it’s not unreasonable. But blaming the teacher for a C? Thaaaaaat’s not gonna fly on CC

None of you are actually answering her question…

I think you need to look over your grades on the classes you took freshmen and sophomore year, and drop down to regular classes on the subjects you scored badly on. For example: both years you only got a B/C in math- drop down, you just don’t have an aptitude for it. On the other hand, you did well in English and history freshmen year, so maybe you did just slack off sophomore year- if you feel like you can handle it better next year, stay in honors.

And it depends on the college- the C’s will definitely hurt if a school focuses on numbers or is highly selective.

A B in honors is better than an A in regular. But a C in honors just won’t cut it.

Continue in honors for classes you got a B in, but go down to regular for anything you got a C in. Also you didn’t exactly have the hardest schedule (at least under CC standards) and still didn’t pull such great grades, also think about how motivated you will be when you are a junior (by far the busiest year). Can you really stay motivated and do the work while other stressors are going on?

Take regular, IMO. You can get into more colleges with a 3.5+ in regular classes (and maybe a few honors classes) than something lower in mostly honors classes.

So I may have gotten a C+ on Honors Algebra II. Is this bad?

Bad for what?
It’s not a good grade, but it’s not the end of the world either.

B’s in honors classes are like an A in a regular class. C’s aren’t acceptable. But you can bounce back after a C. Multiple C’s is harder to recover from.

@halcyonheather I don’t know. Is it the end of the world? Is my college going to look at that grade and ban me from every university in the world? Am I going to be deemed as a failure? I know I’m blowing this out of proportion but might as well…I had all As in my other classes.

Well, obviously not. It’s not going to look good, but it’s unlikely that any college would reject you on the basis of a single grade, especially if they have a really holistic application review process. A C has about the same effect on your GPA as two Bs.
The only real problem is that this might carry over into your future math performance. If you had a bunch of Cs in math, then you might have something to worry about.

By whom?

By my future college?
