hi, i just bought a comforter (supposed to be extremely warm and i chose it because i know that ithaca is really cold) and i was wondering if I would need it. I just found much cheaper comforters but if it really is going to be cold year round , the more expensive one would be worth it. any personal stories/experiences would be appreciated.

It’s definitely REALLY cold in Ithaca during the winter!!! Balch has heating but I’m not sure how great it is…hopefully it’s nice and toasty so we won’t freeze x]

generally the dorms are warm - kids end up opening windows not to be too hot in winter.

its not as cold as they say for some reason…

balch and cornell campus dorms tend to have better heating than off-campus places in collegetown and such…

this is probably b/c cornell has a heating plant whereas off-campus places use traditional heating methods…

It depends on where you are from. A friend from Thailand thought it was absolutely freezing and took pictures of icicles. If you’re from the northeast, you probably won’t think it’s that bad. Dorms are usually well-heated, so even a regular comforter would probably do.

okay thanks. I’m gonna go return it and get my money back lol.

I bought a down comforter…it was way too warm to be used in my dorm room but I was so glad I had it when I moved off campus because my apartment was freezing.

this is another reason why west campus housing is prime real estate…very warm (always) and you get your own dining hall!

I guess so, but I loved the freedom of having my own place. Also, not having to walk up the slope was a sweet deal :)

btw in Balch you have your own radiator in your room and in my experience adjustments to the settings actually changed the temperature of the air. more often than not I was overheated in Balch compared to academic buildings. the windows were a bit drafty though, if you want to sit right next to them.

Believe me, you won’t have any problems with it being too cold in your dorm. In fact, you’ll probably think it’s too hot especially in the summer since they ran the heaters on at night even when it was 81F outside. Buy a good fan since there is no AC in Balch AFAIK. Outside is a completely different story. The wind pierces through your clothes it’s so cold in the winter. You get used to it though and then 45F starts feeling like summer.

It’s cold as BALLS
(hey that’s how one of the students put it to me)
