If you write your essay in 3rd person format?
I want to tell a story based on real life experiences, but I'm wondering if this approach is a bad way to go at it.

“too risky” no. Can you pull it off while still sounding good? Maybe, maybe not. Worst case scenario, you write it in third person, your teacher / essay reader says it doesn’t work, you rewrite it in first person. May as well try it.

Haha I thought I should try it this way since I can’t seem to approach the essay without ripping it up. I have the idea in my head, but just can’t flow from thoughts to actual words.

The essay is not a hs paper. It is a chance to reveal something about yourself. It is meant to be quite a “first person” effort. Google for tips.

Obviously I’m not going to shoot down your individual idea, but I would say that first person is an assumed, integral part of these essays.

However, if you can make it witty or quirky and have it be all about you and somehow come back to first person in the end, that would be interesting.

Haha it’s okay.
I think I’ll try for both a 1st person and 3rd person.
Can’t hurt to try.
Thank you for telling me though.
