Is it easier to get in as a transfer?

I want to go to UNC but I didn't apply as a freshman (OOS, nuff said).

Are my chances increased as a transfer? Do they still discriminate against OOS transfers as to in-state transfers? The website made it seem like they didn't care.

What GPA should I be getting? When is it better to apply, after my first year or after my second?

My HS Stats were a 3.6 GPA and a 1860 SAT (1300 M+V), good ECs.

Thanks

yes its easier to get in as a transfer. Your high school stats don't matter if you are going to transfer, all that matters really is your college gpa. So get a good gpa. They only discrimminate against incoming freshmen because a certain percentage of that has to be in staters.

I know plenty of transfers, some of them are even people who got rejected from carolina but they got in as a transfer.

There is no distinction between in state and out of state when drawing from the pool of transfer applications, so you should have a better shot at admission. Like the previous poster said, just work hard at getting good grades and you should have a decent chance. I don't know how much the SAT is weighted for transfer applicants, but you might consider trying to raise your score by retaking it this summer in order to make yourself more competitive. Just a thought.

Your high school transcript and SAT are important for sophomore transfer students; less important as a junior as you have more college courses under your belt. There is no limit to OOS tranfers students, so more tend to be accepted.

So with my HS transcript, would I be wiser to apply during my freshman year or my sophomore year? Or should I make that decision after first semester grades (if they are good, wait another year, if they are mediocre, apply this year)?

Check the unc website for transfer info. If I remember correctly you must have certain classes completed in order to transfer--from unc.edu--
"We strongly recommend that students complete Carolina’s required courses in math, English, and a foreign language before transferring to the University.
Required Math Courses – One of the following: Math 22, Math 30, Math 31, Math 32, Stat 11
Required English Courses – English 11 and English 12
Required Foreign Language Courses – We strongly recommend that you complete levels 1, 2, and 3 of a foreign language (as well as level 4 if it is required for your degree)"

I saw that. It seems like those are taken freshman year though, just one math class, 2 english classes, and up to a level of foreign language.

I didnt take the recommended Math course and only got 2 units of a language in, but I still got in as a transfer. Well of course you should still try to take those classes, but it should be an indicator of how much easier it is to get in as a transfer.

Apply to stat your sophomore year if you can, its much better. As for ease, yes for out of staters transferring is easier since they drop the in-state quota.

It is a billion times easier to get in as a transfer.

Carolina does a nice job with telling me how i'm going to apply, I must say, i'm looking at other schools, and they are up front, lol.

So I have to apply sophomore year to the College of Arts and Sciences, take a year of classes, then apply for admission to the B-School junior year. And my admission will be greatly based on my sophomore year performance.

It seems like admissions is GPA driven. 68% of the applicants to the B-School are admitted, with the GPA of the average accepted applicant being 3.5, and the GPA of the average denied applicant being 2.9. How hard is it to get a good GPA at UNC?
