hi, i graduated from SU with computer science. my GPA is close to 3.0. i want to apply for computer science grad program at SU too. however, they required minimum 3.0 gpa. so what are the odds for some people like me to get into grad school where you earned undergrad degree from? Thanks!

It depends on the school. Sometimes it’s harder, sometimes it’s easier, sometimes it doesn’t matter.

Ask some professors.

I asked my advisor, he told me i got 70% to 80% percent to be accepted. what the hell does that mean?

That means that you should apply but that you aren’t guaranteed an admittance. If someone told me that I had an 80% chance of winning a prize if I entered a contest, you’d be sure that I’d enter right away. I could lose, yes, but the odds would be in my favor.

It depends on the selectivity of the program. I’d say you’re in an ok position though if your advisor said your chances of getting selected are good.

Depends on the department. The department I’m in at my school has a general rule of not accepting students who went here for their undergrad because they want us to have a more diverse experience, but I did notice one person listed on the website who went here for her undergrad. Another thing to consider is if the department has funding specifically for students who went to that school as an undergrad.

I would start by asking some people in your major first, or maybe talking to some of your TAs.

I did ask the chairman of computer science department. he just told me to apply, and I would get 50% tuition fees off. does that mean anything?

Do you know how to take things literally? “50% off” means just that, IF you are accepted. No one will tell you ahead of time. You will be evaluated along with the current batch of applicants for the limited slots available. From everything you have said, it sounds like you have a bit of an edge.

Are you somehow trying to ask if you shouldn’t apply to other schools? Of course you should.

It makes a difference if you are doing MS vs PhD. It is usually not done in that field to do PhD at same school as undergrad or MS. But you usually can do MS at same. Since the 2 people you spoke to didn’t discourage you, I’d guess this is not an issue.
