Really? I heard transfers from other four year institutions are given lowest priority...

Sorry, I meant to say other four years. I actually think it's just four years in general, not UCs then other four years. Either way, you really ought to consider just tapping the potential UCR has to offer. I've met amazing UCR grads. In fact, one of the professors here at UCLA, John Zaller, is a preeminent person in his field and graduated from UCR.

I still have the option to go to cal poly slo... But my parents are forcing me to go to UCR! Would it be harder to transfer from csu to uc?

I would imagine yes. I'm going on a holistic judgement here based on experience and knowledge of the transfer system, and I think that UCs are given greater prominence than CSUs.

Either SLO or UCR will offer you great opportunities, but I think that overall UCR offers you a better reputation, if only based on the UC name. It does depend though, SLO has some FANTASTIC programs. Any ideas on a major yet?

def go to cal poly slo. way better school.

it can be hard either way but it can be done. http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/transfer/tr_select_criteria.html

what's your major?

awakenedream, what is your criteria for SLO being better? I can see an argument for it, but don't you think the UC name carries farther?

i'm sure there are other posts i have participated in around here that are ucr vs slo. but anyways, first of all, think of the college experience. slo is charming with a nice atmosphere and nice campus. riverside is in a not-so-good area that's smoggy and blah. also, cal poly slo is more selective and is considered by many to be on par with the mid uc's (sb, i, d) for many programs. for some programs like architecture and engineering, cal poly is very strong. i don't know, if it was my choice i'd go to cal poly slo over ucr any day. i know lots of people who absolutely love cal poly slo, and i can't say the same for ucr. the atmosphere, surroundings, the people, is just better at cal poly.

i know the uc names does carry a lot of weight, but cal poly slo is not unheard of by employers. when i'm sure you can get a good education at ucr if you take initiative and take advantage of everything, but a school with around 80% acceptance rate versus cal poly slo with around a 40+% acceptance rate, you're bound to have a higher quality student body at the more selective institution.

UCR is a research based unversity and Cal Poly is a teaching school... Thats why my dad is forcin me to go to ucr...

My major is electrical engineering

Well, awakendream, you have made a fantastic argument. I think that if int7 is looking for a great 4 year experience, then SLO would be the better experience. However, for transfer...it might be easier from UCR.

int7, you really ought to sit with your parents and explain to them that this is YOUR education, not theirs.

just because SLO is a state school doesnt mean that all UC's are better than SLO.

SLO is a state school but it is the BEST california state school and it is on par with mid tier UC's such as irvine, davis, and santa barbara.

if one seeks a undergraduate degree many would agrue than SLO is in some ways better than irvine, davis, and santa barbara.

SLO is far more prestigious than UC riverside and even UC santa cruz, UC's dont necessarily carry more weight.

Many employers across California love SLO grads because of the hardcore programs offered at this school.

Okay, better than UCR I can swallow, but better than UCI and UCSB? That's a stretch. UCI and UCSB are serious research universities with Nobel Prize winning faculty, huge libraries, and reputations as fantastic research centers.

If your goal is the terminal BA/BS, then maybe. But if you want to go to grad school, the difference between UCI and UCSB and Cal Poly SLO I think are fairly pronounced.

I don't think anyone should be embarassed about getting an education.

That I agree with 100%

So is it stupid to be going to UCR over SLO for EE?

I'd say that at the end, I'm going to have to compromise and say that it will depend on your career goals. If you have no plan to go to grad school in the immediate or near future, I'd say SLO is your best bet.

hey im trying to decide between cal poly/UC Davis/UCSB.
I want to do engineering or business/economics. Money is an issue. I do not plan to go to grad school, by the time im 22/23 i want to be a working man. what do u think?

UCSB has great engineering, but for straight-to-work sort of programs, Cal Poly isn't a bad bet.

if you change your mind in the future, i'm sure you could find a good graduate school anyhow. just maintain good grades while you're at cal poly. actual work experience would be your "ec".

Why is it that UC's prepare you for grad school better than csu's?
