Is it even possible? great ACT, ECs, crappy GPA

I have recently been looking at colleges (maybe too much for being a Junior) and I have become increasingly worried over the prospect of not getting into a good school because of my not perfect letter grades I have received so far in HS.

The colleges I want to go to:
- Macalester College (LEGACY)
- University of Chicago
- University of Illinois UC
- Knox College
- Reed College
- Hampshire College
- Tufts
- U of W - Madison
- Bard
- Brown (haha)

As you can see, I want to major somewhere in the humanities area.

My GPA: All unweighted. I take ALL of the AP weighted classes, but I don't know how that would raise my GPA. It's an upward trend though!

Fresh: 3.39 (screwed up. I was in a phase when I thought it was cool to rebel the system)
Soph: 3.7 (better, but had horrible teachers)
Junior: 4.0 (yay!)
Senior: hoping for another 4.0!

I have done extremely well in my classes, but late homework assignments here and there have given me some "B's." Those B's were in my AP classes though, so I don't know how it'll affect that. I got a C in Math for freshman year...

My English teacher told me this semester that I have been one of his best students when it comes to writing and expressing my opinions. He is going to give me an OUTSTANDING rec.

My journalism teacher recommended University of Chicago to me...but cited my less than perfect grades.. but they all think I am an amazing writer, and very passionate about subjects pertaining to philosophy and politics.

All of my teachers, have noted in Parent Teacher Conferences that I'm one of the most unique student to pass through my high school in a long time.

ECs:

Student Senate - one year. I resigned because all they cared about was prom and homecoming and NOTHING ELSE..stupid.

Standardized Testing:

ACT: 34 composite, second try. (shooting for a 35 for third...hopefully)

I want to major in either:

international relations, poli sci, philosophy, sociology, or anthro

I want to study abroad too!

Future:

What should be my course of action for my junior and senior year? I really want to get into Uchicago SHOULD I APPLY ED FOR A BETTER CHANCE? and I hear that an outstanding essay may outweigh a few B's and an isolated C in High school... Is this true? Also, I am taking all four years of French...will this help me - particularly this language?

Thanks!

UChicago doesn’t have an Early Decision option, only Early Action (which is nonbinding).

Yeah, I looked again and it was EA, not ED. my bad.

EA will almost always help your chances, as long as you are qualified, at any school.
Your GPA shows a steady improvement through all your years, and i’m not sure about UChicago, but many schools are forgiving of poor freshman grades. So i wouldn’t sweat that much over it.
I think you have a fair shot at UChicago, however keep in mind, that are a lot of other strong students applying to UChicago.

bump! thanks aureonae

I wouldn’t take ACT a third time, your score is above average at most/all schools anyways. UChicago and Brown’s average is 28-33 according to collegeboard

bumpity bump.

chance moi!!!

Heres a shot
Macalester College (LEGACY)-safety

 • University of Chicago-match/reach
 • University of Illinois UC-safety/match
 • Knox College-safety
 • Reed College-match
 • Hampshire College-safety/match
 • Tufts-match
 • U of W - Madison-safety/match
 • Brown (haha)-reach

thanks ari102791 :]]

if I were you I would go U chicago with EA
if rejected go for Tufts or Mac with EDII

GPA is not such a big concern if you took challenging courses. also, you show an upward trend in GPA so its alright.
keep it up and good luck.

Also, if you like humanities check out Wesleyan University in CT.

As long as you have amazing essays for U Chicago you can get in. Their admissions process is pretty unorthodox and they put a lot of weight on your essays.

it is possible…

Thanks everyone! ^-^**

Any more chancers?

ch-ch-ch-chancesss?

chance me!!

What were your ACT subscores? Obviously, if you are clearly interested in English, and your English subscore was a 36, it is different than if you were interested in a math major.

If I were in your position, I’d probably retake the ACT, only because the difference between a 34 and a 36 is a few questions, and its very possible that you could get a 36 on your next attempt. Note that on collegeboard, they show you the middle 50%, not the average. That means 25% of applicants were above and below that average. It can’t hurt.

Besides Brown and UofC (Which I personally believe you have a good shot at), all of your schools are matches or safety apps. UofC is known as a school that weighs the non-academic aspects much more than the average school. You have good E.Cs.

If I were you, I’d put more emphasis on the editor position.

c’mon guys! chance it~

ooh, and thanks jptoor ^^

good gravy; chance me? or am I chanced out? :]
