Is it even worth applying? Native American student

Already applied to Brown Early Decision..but was curious if it is even worth applying if I am denied from Brown. I would have to take Dec. Subject Tests I guess, which I think I would do fine on.

We have had a Native American rep. from Harvard come to our school before to simply recruit. We have a large Native community at our school..

But I was wondering what you all thought my chances could be, I would have never considered putting Harvard in the spectrum, but if they are searching for Native Americans I am most certainly willing to apply.. There are a few things about Harvard and Native recruitment on the website as well.. here are my stats:

3.76...weighted like a 4.5- Nobody in my grade has earned a perfect 4.0 unweighted.

act: 29...the worst component of my application, I know.

pretty competitive magnet school...

native american from oklahoma

ec's:

district stuco speaker twice

district stuco delegate

oklahoma state stuco president

oklahoma state stuco exec. board

hosting state stuco convention (leading 2500 + kids)

basic summer leadership workshop two summers (1 year delegate, 1 year counselor/staff)

national stuco convention twice

national stuco presidents board

national stuco election committee, Region 6 board member

stuco secretary, stuco president

usta tennis national ranking 9, 10

varsity tennis captain 9, 10, 11

regional runner up twice, state tournament twice etc

native american orphanage volunteer, christmas gift drive coordinator

social studies/athletic dept. boy of the year

Ap Scholar and some other other minute academic awards

I am hoping my extracurriculars will help.

will have taken 9 APs upon graduation..3 this year. Take Macroeconomics in the afternoon at a local community college.

--I have made several chance threadsI just feel like I am soooooooooo under qualified to even think of applying to top tier schools.

I have some solid safeties and schools I have been accepted to that I would be happy attending.

I would appreciate ANY AND ALL feedback please.

why not .

Have you been in touch with the Harvard tennis coach? (And the Brown coach for that matter?) The ACT is low, but not impossibly low for recruited athletes.

Well I did talk to the coaches, however, I decided I did not want to pursue playing in college.

well, you wont get in if you dont apply.

if money isnt an issue, i really dont see any reason why not.

Given the overall dearth of Native-American applicants I would not be surprised at all if you were to get into Brown ED (any hooked applicant within the 25-75 range of scores has an excellent shot already), but frankly, if you don’t get into Brown ED I don’t think that bodes well for your chances RD at Harvard because ED for hooked applicants is pretty much the most surefire way to get into Ivy League schools.

Thanks Monstor- very helpful. I know, I am praying for ED. But I was kind of under the impression it wasn’t as big of a deal to do ED at Brown. Plus I have such looooowwww scores. But I can’t help but try.

Well…

If you get into Brown Early Decision, then you have to go to Brown. If you get rejected from Brown Early Decision, then chances are that you won’t be getting into Harvard Regular Decision as it is much more selective.

But anything can happen, so you should try applying. In the worst case scenario, you’ll have no “What ifs” hanging over you.

If Brown doesn’t work out for you, consider Dartmouth. It was founded in 1769 as a school for Native Americans, and even though it went largely Anglo hundreds of years ago, it still remembers its heritage and recruits Native Americans and provides excellent programs for them.

[Native American Program at Dartmouth College](<a href=“Homepage 11/30/2019”>Homepage 11/30/2019)

Coureur- I have looked a lot into Dartmouth, but I am afraid maybe its not the best fit, although I have not visited. I would have to take my subject tests as well…Hopefully Brown will workout. I appreciate the feedback a lot!!

I recently read The Gatekeepers.

As a native American --and a bright student-- you are in very much demand for top schools.

Absolutely apply where you feel you will get the academics etc that you want in order to pursue your dream.

Good luck
